→ A couple hours south of Indianapolis, at the historic Churchill Downs, this weekend’s HullabaLOU Music Festival three-day concert begins Friday, and runs through Sunday. Since I’m not going, it affords the opportunity to watch a little of their live webcast. For me, a live music webcast is very nearly as good as finding treasure chest full of Coors Light and beef jerky. I like to geek-out and see how they handle the technical parts (audio, camerawork, etc…) of the webcast. Most of the time, I end up entranced at the coolness of watching it live, paired with being pissed because I would have done it differently. But that’s a “me” problem, right?

HullabaLOU, brings to mind both a New Orleans Jazzfest (held inside a horse track there too) and an old school Toledo Speedway Jam (the kind that had one stage, with bands like Aerosmith, Triumph, Molly Hatchet and Eddie Money playing to a buzzed-out crowd in 1981).
At HullabaLOU, the recipe is five stages, with big names headlining (Kenny Chesney, Dave Mathews and Bon Jovi) and better gems (Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Al Green, Zac Brown Band, Dwight Yoakam) on other stages, mixed with some good bands that just haven’t hit big yet – and some that may never. That’s the intrigue of a festival: seeing the headliner rock and also acting as judge and jury to a group of bands – a handful who seem destined for bigger things.
Notable: Indy’s Duke Tumatoe and the Power Trio will have their set webcast at Saturday. Other notables online live include Gov’t Mule’s set at 7:15pm Saturday night and a Sunday webcast schedule with The Black Crowes and the Avett Brothers, with Dave Matthews as the grand finale.

→ Cara Jean Wahlers releases her album, Goodnight Charlotte July 31, and WICR 88.7 FM will debut the album this Saturday night/Sunday morning (depending on how you want to view it), from midnight until 3am. Cary Allen Fields will do the honors on his Redbud Radio show. (Listen to WICR)
Wahlers will celebrating the official release day on the 31st by playing at the Riverfront Ampitheatre at the Indianapolis Art Center. Wahlers has invited a couple musical guests “and the beer truck from the Broad Ripple Brew Pub”, according to her website. If it rains, they move it to the theater inside. ($10, 7pm – no smoking)
In 2007, Wahlers went to see cellist Grover Parido perform with Blueprint Music. Cara approached Parido to see if there might be a possible musical collaboration, and it eventually resulted in a two-year journey to make the new album.

→For its special, half-hour musical season finale, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim show Squidbillies featured an array of Americana musicians, and CN is rebroadcasting the episode Friday night and Saturday morning.
Drive-By Truckers appeared as animated versions of themselves, and Lucinda Williams, Todd Snider, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Rhett Miller and others voiced animals and provided music in the episode that debuted last Sunday night, titled “America: Why I Love Her”. The show is wierdly intelligent, mildly subversive, and just plain odd.
